 WHERE DOES IT TAKE PLACE?
The Rise festival takes place at the Jean Dry Lake Bed located in the Mojave Desert, 25 miles south of Las Vegas, a wonderful place.

  WHO PARTICIPATE?
The associations The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth and Communities in School of Southern Nevada participate in this festival.
Tens of thousands of people gather to simultaneously launch tens of thousands of biodegradable lanterns into the desert night sky.

 WHEN AND HOW OFTEN DOES IT TAKE PLACE?
The rise festival takes place every October since its creation in 2014. This year, 2023, it will be on October 19-22.

 WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT IT? WHAT DO PEOPLE DO?

The festival offers live music and theater performances, delicious food and drinks to create a pleasant atmosphere. At sunset, people prepare their lanterns and, at a given moment, release them. Thousands of lanterns are lit simultaneously, creating an incredible sight, and sending a message of individual hopes and dreams.   

Why do people celebrate it? Which are its origins?
 The event is held to help people "get up," to help them get through difficult times together as a community. Each participant will receive a paper flashlight and a marker. When the sun sets, messages, hopes and dreams are written on the lantern and thrown into the air. Their loved ones are also honored.

Its origin dates back to the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), a time when Buddhism became popular throughout the country. An emperor learned that Buddhist monks would look at the remains of the cremation of Buddha's body, lit lanterns to worship the Buddha, on the 15th of the first lunar month. Lanterns will be lit in all imperial palaces and temples to show respect to Buddha. 

I think that more than a festival it is a symbolic act where people can free themselves from many burdens, sending a message of individual hopes and dreams in a magnificent exhibition.
